Trigger warning: mentions abuse

Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven. –Matthew 5:16

I keep my cell phone on the nightstand next to me when I sleep so I can use my flashlight app in case I need to get up in the middle of the night. My husband prefers our bedroom to be completely dark to go to sleep, so we try to shut out out even the smallest beams from clocks, the T.V., etc.

One early morning required a trip to the bathroom. When I tapped the flashlight app, a startling amount of light pierced the darkness of the bedroom. In my attempt to direct it far away from my sleeping husband, I shined it too close to my own face.

It was so bright, it was nearly blinding–a single beam from a flashlight app.

Countless realities in our world are as dark as my bedroom that night: disease, terrorism, sex-trafficking, poverty….Reminders of the gruesome nature of evil are rarely far away. In fact, social media circulates them continuously.

It’s easy to feel helpless and overwhelmed. I know I often do when it comes to the reality of the sexual abuse of children in particular. An issue that hits close to home, the evil that permeates it often feels daunting.

Then I’m reminded that darkness cannot survive the light–even a single beam cuts through it.

In fact, scripture promises that the Light conquers the dark:

What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men; and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.

–John 1:4-5

We can shine light into the darkness in a million small ways, and each one matters. God planted the desire to fight particular evils in each of us for a reason. The passion He placed in us for them makes each of us unique. As we become more the person He made us to be, stepping into that passion…we shine our light, which is Him in us.

It’s difficult to live authentically and blaze trails of truth and light. I need a lot of reminders.

I enjoy DaySpring for this reason. Their art, jewelry, and home decor encourage that light to keep shining. I selected the stunning gold-plated necklace pictured above for just that reason…a beautiful reminder to be brave and shine my light.

Wearing it is a bold reminder to live what it declares: shine.

How do you shine your light?
